The Girl

A friend (Hi Jessica!), who I know through my sister-in-law’s homeschool group sent me this picture last week.

Josie summer 2008

She took it this summer at a birthday party, when my sis-in-law was babysitting the kids for us.

I love this picture. I’m not sure I have ever taken a picture that quite captures the essence that is our Girl like this picture does. Jessica then shared that she caught this picture while the girl and her 4 year old cousin were in the midst of a posing contest. It’s classic Girl and her cousin.

She’s in Kindergarten this year and has developed quite the back-talkin’ attitude on top of her princess-drama-diva ways.

Sunday, she lost her very first tooth. She’s quite convinced its yet another sign of how grown up she is becoming.

first lost tooth!

Pay no mind to the temporary tattoo on the side of her face. The lost tooth may be a sign of her growing up but the temporary tattoo is a sign of her growing obstinance. And the screaching she did when I scrubbed it off that night is a sign of her continued deservance (shutup, it is too a word) of the title Princess-Whines-A-Lot.

Luckily for the Girl, the tooth fairy doesn’t care if you whine a lot or not when she pays for teeth.

Obligatory

My mother-in-law is selling Avon. I’ve been asked to post a link to her sales page HERE. I have to ya’ll, she has offered to help our oldest son and her other grandson sell popcorn for Cub Scouts at her work, and later my daughter will be selling Girl Scout Cookies, so as you see, I really have to post the link.

It’s a family thing and family peace this coming Holiday season hinges on these kinds of things.

Right?

Garth Was Here

Every day I drive by this house. It’s directly across the street from the YMCA parking lot and it’s like many of the houses close to the Oklahoma State University campus. The couch on the front porch is by no means unusual. It’s a rent house like nearly all of the houses in that part of town.

"Garth Books and Sandy lived here 1987-88"

What makes this house a little different is the lettering across the top of the porch, just under the eaves, that proudly proclaims “Garth Brooks and Sandy lived here 1987-88.”

I always wonder about the land lord who put that lettering up there. Do they charge extra to live there? And exactly when did they decide to put that lettering up? Where else did Garth (and/or Sandy) live while they were going to school here?

Weekend Distractions

My sisterinlaw’s biopsy will be on Tuesday. In the meantime we are playing and staying busy this weekend. Hank, DeeDee, and Tommy are all at the mobile spay and neuter clinic right now. Husband bought a 1984 21 foot ski boat, a 1965 Chevy stepside pickup, and a couple of motorcycles at an auction today, while the kids and I attended a free community event where we got free hotdogs, cookies, drinks, balloons, popcorn and horseback rides. We had fun. Tomorrow I get to go do something cool that I’ll be sharing with you in the first week or so of October. I’m really excited about it, but it has to stay a secret for now. (I know, I’m being mysterious. Sorry! You have to wait to find out what it is.)

I’m a sucker for internet quizes and Sherry posted a fun one that I had to take. This is one of the coolest ones I’ve taken in quite a while. Let me know if you take it and post it so I can come see your results.

Your result for Reincarnation Placement Exam…

Spy

Live well, ride fast, and die young, baby!

Well, you turned out to be something of a rogue. This may not be exactly the life you wanted… but it’s difficult to place people who want to enjoy all the romance and intrigue of civilization, without actually having a demanding job. Besides, since you enjoy the benefits of humanity so much more than you enjoy the press of humanity itself… you shouldn’t have much trouble with your role in life. As long as you aren’t afraid of danger there’s a place for you in society, even if it’s a rather dark and wicked place. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to fulfill the role of a spy.

The good news: You’re free and clever, and you can do whatever the heck you want. The bad news: everybody else is free and clever too, and they’re not all on your side.

With the flick of a blade, you can change the course of history. Might be fun. Might be a little messy.

UPDATE! Husband took the quiz and we laughed at the results. Dude, it hits pretty close to the mark–well except for the horses, we don’t have horses to make a part of the family.

Gypsy Camp

You sing! You dance! You flee from the authorities!

You were a bit difficult to place, because you like civilization and humanity — but when it comes to work, you don’t really fit into the system, the ruts and the rituals, that modern civilization embraces. You like your own ways… your old ways.

We’ve placed you among a hardy Gypsy family. They’ll have you plucking a violin before you can talk, and dancing before you can walk. The road is your home, and your horses are members of your family. You get to wear lots of shiny things.

We expect that you’ll have a good life. Even if your people are surrounded by a world where they don’t really fit in, they have each other, an oasis of compatibility in an unbalanced world. We know you’ll make the most of it!

Pass Me a Pink Ribbon

My best friend from college–my college roommate–married my oldest step-brother in 1995 and became my sister-in-law.

I was her maid of honor. I was there when she gave birth. I am their son’s godmother. We’ve been there for each other through the deaths of beloved family members, family dramas, and my step-brother’s diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Oh and let’s not forget my step-mother’s lupus and other assorted health problems, and my schizophrenic father’s suicide.

Some of my best memories come from times we have spent together shopping, exploring cemetaries, camping and crawling through caves, cruising and getting lost on road trips, and bar hopping.

Tomorrow, she meets with a surgeon to schedule a biopsy. He’s the “best breast health guy in the region.” Over the last three weeks she has gone from finding a lump, to a mammogram, to an ultrasound, and an MRI. It doesn’t look good. Cysts have been ruled out. She has been told that it is most likely breast cancer. She has already made the decision that if the biopsy confirms cancer she will have a double mastectomy–I can’t even imagine having to make that decision.

She’s three and half months younger than me.

I’m scared for her…. and for me and the rest of her friends and family. But mostly for her.
