Preschool

Tomorrow, the Youngest begins Preschool. Because I will be working four days a week, we’ve decided to have him attend preschool everyday instead of just three. The structure of the school day will be good for him and give him an outlet to channel all his energy. It will also allow Snoring Daddy to get his work done during the five hours each day that he’s in school.

It’s our fifth and last year at the church’s early childhood center. We began sending our children there in the Fall of 2004, when the Oldest Boy had just turned three and I was pregnant with the Youngest. The Girl and Youngest Boy have attended each of the mother’s day out classes and the preschool class too. Next year, our Youngest will be in the public school system attending PreKindergarten.

It’s bitter sweet to be finishing there this year, we’ve loved that program and the teachers but the tuition has strained our household budget. It will be nice to have that extra two to three hundred dollars each month next year to put towards other things.

But the early childhood center has been totally worth every penny for our family. It has been a blessing to our children and to us. I hope our kids always have the caliber of teachers they have had there as well as in PreKindergarten and Kindergarten. In my opinion, a good, caring teacher is one of the greatest gifts a child can have.

Thus the reason I work at ours - to pay the tuition! The one year both boys went (Tyler in the infant class and Travis in kindergarten there) just about killed us because I did NOT work that year. I know - it was a crazy idea, but I had a GREAT year that year - poor, but organized and ready to do pretty much anything I was asked to do. Much like now, only I have all these JOBS that get in the way these days!

That’s fantastic that you guys found such a great program! I know they can be few and far between. When I was a kid, my mom sent us to a place called “King’s Kids” and I only remember I hated it and cried every day when I had to go. What a relief for you guys that must have been! And what a relief that extra cash will be! ;)

  • It’s so hard to say goodbye to a school that you and your family loves.

Hold on to your hat now, because they start whipping through those school years at lightning speed.

    I miss preschool.

Big Red starts his parent toddler class this year and I keep thinking, three more years and they’re all in school! Ours is through the school system and it’s parent participation, so the tuition is nominal, but another $100 floating around isn’t going to hurt!

I agree with you about teachers - I think one reason I always did well in school is had EXCELLENT teachers till grade four - by then I had a good solid foundation so it wasn’t as big of a deal my grade four teacher enjoyed talking about her upcoming wedding more then teaching me!!!

  • I so understand this. We loved our girls preschool so much that my husband goes back regularly to visit their head teacher and brings her toys and school supplies that he scrounges. And if they had an after school program for elementary students, I’d have my younger one there in a flash.

The difference in money between just aftercare for 1 versus daycare for 2 IS humongous. But of course, now that money is going into their college funds….

It’ll be better for your youngest to go 5 days. They really get a lot more out of it and it’ll get him ready for kindergarten

  • Hmm, working at the preschool to pay for tuition is a fantastic idea. I’m sure they are always looking for extra hands.
I fully agree that a patient and caring teacher is really important to enriching a child’s life.
