Jo Derek

Summer vacation is nearly over. We haven’t gone anywhere on vacation this year and it looks like we won’t be going anywhere particularly exciting or distant in the next three weeks either. But the kids have done two swimming lesson sessions and we’ve built a swing set and slide for play at home.

This summer has been difficult on the kids without the distraction of vacation and the added frustration of not having all the activities they enjoy during the course of a normal school day. There have been some behavioral issues as they have learned that a bad attitude gets video games taken away for the remainder of the summer; but a good attitude and cleaning your room without hassle earns 30 minutes to an hour playing Wii Fit or Wii Sports.

It’s nearly over. Soon they will return to school and the structured days they thrive on. Not to mention earlier bedtimes.

In the meantime we will make the most of our remaining three weeks and enjoy the little things: like extra braids for swim lessons.

I used to LOVE braids in my hair! And, I’m all for early bedtimes - we still do those during the summer, just to make the transition to school easier.

    I love this post.

  • Judy, I always had braids in my hair as a girl. I still like to wear a braid actually. We are working on getting bed times back under control. The late sunset doesn’t help much during the Summer.

    DeeJay, Thanks!

    That hair-do is super cute!
On the news they talk about everyone having “staycations” instead of vacations due to the economy and gas prices. People are pitching tents in the lawn or living room and having fun at home. I went on a getaway 07/18-20, but it was so friggin hot and humid I wished we’d stayed home!!
