Yeah Toast!

We have XM satellite in our car and we’ve recently discovered the XM Kid’s station. We love it. By “we” I do mean all of us. They play entertaining kids music by a a wide variety of artists from Laurie Berkener (LOVE her!) and the Muppets to more adult artists like the Barenaked Ladies who have a new Kid’s CD called “Snacktime” coming out in May. I love me some BNL!

Check out Cake’s version of Mahna Mahna. Dude. Cake! Cake is my go-to music for all night writing/working marathons. I completed the installation of an exhibit listening to nothing but Cake nearly 10 years ago. Ah, Cake.

Anyway. Where was I before I got sidetracked by the awesomeness that is Cake?

They also play the preteen/teenie bopper stuff like the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus/Hanna Montana. Everytime they play a song featuring a female leadsinger, my five year old daughter yells, “IS THIS HANNA MONTANA?”

The girl has been wondering around this afternoon saying “Robbie Schaefer’s Stuck in a Real Tall Tree” over and over again. It’s like some odd manifestation of Tourette’s. She’s referring to the show that plays from 6:00pm-10:00pm CST.

From the website:

Robbie Schaefer’s Mom wants you to know that he’s funny. Not weird-funny, just funny-funny. In addition to being the guitarist and songwriter for the acclaimed folk/pop band Eddie From Ohio, he released his first CD for kids, ‘Songs For Kids Like Us’, in 2006. He now brings his talent and extremely bald head to XMKiDS–where his show will occur from the top of a tree. Where he hangs out with his guitar. And a talking fish named Clarence. And where his Mom comes to visit and speaks to him through a megaphone. Okay, maybe he’s a little weird-funny. But his Mom thinks he’s the greatest.

I’m pretty sure Robbie Schaefer is weird funny too. But in a good way. He reminds me of Dr. Dimento, only for kids.

XM kids also plays gems like these:

Total Momsense! by Anita Renfroe

Most of us have seen this one on Youtube by now, but I think it’s hilarious that it’s now made it to the XM Kids station for regular rotation and entertainment for all the mom’s chauffeurring their children too and from school, playdates, and other activities.

TOAST! by Heywood Banks (this is a slightly more political version than the one played on XM Kids–the last verse is different.)

I just played that last one and my children heard it from upstairs. I heard screeches of “TOAST! YEAH TOAST!” as they scrambled down the stairs like a stampeeding herd of elephants.

Yes, they are that loud. Which is a nice segue into my personal favorite, “Mom’s Got a Headache, She Needs a Nap!” (Which I could not find anywhere online. At all. Help!)

When we heard that one the girl said, “Mom, sometimes we give you a headache too.”

Yes. Yes, they do.

I love me some Laurie Berkner and oh lord, the wonderfulness of CAKE! They are a “local” band for us and I’ve been a major, stalker-status, fan for years. BNL making a children’s album? I am in heaven! HEAVEN!

I will have to check and see if Sirius has a kid-friendly channel as well. My hubby got a Sirius radio for Christmas that he has yet to install (can you believe that?).

Heh. Heywood Banks looks nothing like what I pictured in my mind when I hear him occasionally on the radio.

I’m going to check out the Cake and BNL stuff–woohoo! Our current favorite cd’s are Lisa Loeb’s kid’s cd and Putamayo’s. Kiddo LOVES Sheep! by Zoe Lewis and I can’t wait until he’s old enough to understand she talks mostly of how tasty they are when cooked!

Isn’t it nice when they grow out of the Wiggles and start enjoying more “grown up” kids music?! We don’t have XM radio, so I rely on TV and internet to find out what’s “up and coming” in the world of children’s music. (Thank you for your suggestions!)

Okay, I need to know about this XM radio, because I’ve got b-day money burnin’ a hole in my pocketbook. Do you love it? Can you listen to talk radio without the commercials? Is there a monthly fee? (Yes, I know I could google this and find out, but I’d rather ask someone who actually uses the thing.)

  • Yes there is a monthly fee, I think it’s about 10 dollars. There is all kinds of talk radio, sports, political, other. There are a few commercials, but you hardly ever hear them. And only on certain stations, but I’m not sure which ones. I think the commercials are usually XM related, you know, like they advertise whats on other XM stations.

There are different models. You can get sports models that you carry around with you (I guess like an ipod?) and there are those that you put in your car and in your house. Ours is one that my husband uses for his shop and our car.

We really like the variety. We’ve had sirius in the past and I think XM is way better.

  • We don’t get XM but Sirius with Satellite. They Might Be Giants have a couple of kids’ albums and when they had a “grown up” show in Madison, they stated it was definitely for 16+. Mom an Dad wented an Mom boughted Dad their kids’ albums.

Our boy likes the Jonas Bros and Mom’s best influence on him is Sting. We all enjoy jazz - thems coooool cats!
