Why I love him Wednesday…the father daughter thing.

Due to a family emergency and my own issues and distractions regarding what happened, I just didn’t get a Why I love him Wednesday post up last week. And despite the fact that the Flu has hit our house this week, I refuse to let today go by without a WLW post.

My husband is a terrific dad. He’s always been involved in the kids’ lives. He did diaper duty, he gave them baths, he puts them to bed at night and sings a special song that he made up and personalized for each one. He tries to find time to spend one on one with each of them too. He understands the power a father holds over their child’s life. He understands this because he’s seen what a poor relationship with a father can do. He’s also experienced it.

Even more important, he understands the influence a father has in a daughter’s life. He knows that when a little girl does not receive the love and attention she craves from her dad, she will find it in other unhealthy ways as she grows into a woman.

Last Friday we saw a flyer advertising the community event “Dancing with Daddy.” It was scheduled for Saturday. As we began to drive home, he detoured by the local parks and recreation administration building.

I smiled as he explained, “I’ve been looking for something special to do with the Girl and I know she would love this. She’s just so very girly.”

So we purchased the tickets. And on Saturday I spent some time helping her get ready for her evening with Daddy. She was so excited to go to her first dance.

I curled her hair.

After it dried, I took the curlers out and combed her hair, putting pretty filigree bobby pins in it, to hold the sides back. She was so excited I couldn’t get her to hold still.

Can't stand still

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

She ate up the attention. She’s our middle child afterall, and even though she’s the only girl she still seems to crave that extra something to make her feel special. So I snapped picture after picture, until she started getting tired.

Tired girl

But as time came closer for her to leave with her daddy, she found her smile again.

Going out with Daddy

No that is not lipstick. She wanted to wear makeup and I refused. She’s four and I can’t stand seeing makeup on little girls. I did let her wear a little bit of transparent lip gloss. Cotton Candy flavored, of course.

“But mommy, the girls at the dance will be wearing makeup.”

“I’m not their mommy. You are a little girl, you will look like a little girl.”

“Oh are these earings?”

“No they are hair pins. You are too young for earrings.”

“But my friends wear earrings.”

“I’m not their mommy.”

And now I have truly become my mother.

Then her brothers couldn’t handle it anymore and had to get in on the act.

So much going on in this photo

Finally, even my darling daughter, the camera-hound, had enough of all this picture nonsense.

No more pictures please

That is until it was time to leave with her daddy.

They had a lovely time at the dance (which only lasted an hour and a half).

Dancing with Daddy

And now she has a very special memory…and so does he.

Dancing with Daddy

It’s moments like these that I really know that my children could not have a better dad. And because he takes the time and the thought to do things like this, my little girl will always know she’s worthy of love and respect and will demand it from the boys and men she meets later in life.

And that’s why I love him.

That is so awesome! My school used to host Father-Daughter dances in elementary school. I still remember dancing to the Dinosaur (open the door, get on the floor? Anybody?). How wonderful for your family to have such an involved dad!

  • Little girls LOVE those father/daughter dances. Ok, well, maybe I wouldn’t have because I was a total tomboy . . . but my dad did horseback riding lessons with me. That was cool, too.

    Love the pictures!

That is so sweet. My daughter recetly had a school roller skating party and my husband volunteered to take Haley. He is a pretty fantastic dad too.

  • warcrygirl says:

OMG, that is the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen! And yes, the role a father plays in his daughters’ life is VERY important. My father wasn’t a part of mine and my childhood was more difficult because of it.

    She is so pretty!

And this is just an adorable story. I think I love him too!

  • Mrs.K says:

Way to go Daddy! She was still so excited at school on Monday morning. She pulled her tickets from the dance out of her pocket first thing, and told me all about it! This was something she will always remember! :)

  • Summer says:

Awww, how sweet! She looks so cute, and so happy. :)

  • That is one of the most precious things I have ever seen. I can’t wait for my little girl to be able to do things like that with her dad.

  • Emma says:

What a lovely idea! And what a lovely husband! I hope he gets to read the comments.

  • Genevieve says:

AWESOME dad! Such cute photos too (and awesome mom for documenting the whole thing :) )

  • Jennifer says:

Oh that is incredibly sweet! What a great Dad.

I’m sitting here in a corner of the showroom at my corp office with the biggest smile and tears running down my face. This is TRULY one of the sweetest posts I’ve ever read.

Her smile. Oh….she looked so very much like a princess.

This made my day. No, actually it made my week!!!

  • Oh - my husband took our middle daughter to their Daddy-Daughter dance on Saturday too. This was their second year - and the double-dated with her best buddy and her daddy. The dance is one of Olivia’s most anticipated events of the year.

I love your pictures - I totally forgot to get some of her getting ready. I think I need to post about it, cause I am remembering all the precious anticipation…

Gott love those Daddy’s who know how to treat their girls like the precious princesses they are!

  • Peter says:

I loved this post and the pictures. This is something very close to my hear- I’m a dad to four girls and a boy (all under 12) so girls parties and dances are a regular thing for me. These special times we get to spend with our children are precious and the bonds we form together are for life.
God bless you and your family.
    Love and peace, Peter.

  • krissy says:

Your daughter is stunning! Your family is stunning! I just love the super blonde hair!!!

Thanks for the WLW…..I haven’t done one in awhile myself…oops!

  • Cathy says:

Okay, those pictures with the curlers could not be any cuter. What a great memory. I have to say I love hearing women who complement their husband in that way. Good for you.

  • kerflop says:

Oh I think this is so sweet. I have very fond memories of the daddy-daughter dates my papa took me on. I hope I didn’t offend with my latest rant!

  • What can I say, but awwwww!
And thank you for the no makeup, no earrings thing–they’re so pretty, what do they need with it at that age?
I also like what you said about your daughter demanding love and respect because she’s seen that in her dad. I’m hoping my daughters are seeing the same in their father and in our relationship!

  • Oh, I totally just teared up.

That was sweet, adorable, beautiful, wonderful.
